Origin and traditional use of green Jalapeño pepper
Native to Mexico, and more specifically to the Xalapa (or Jalapa) region in the state of Veracruz, the Jalapeño pepper is one of the most consumed peppers in the world. Harvested before maturity, when it is still green, it retains a fresh and herbaceous flavor that is highly appreciated.
Traditionally, green Jalapeño pepper is used in Mexican cuisine to flavor sauces (salsa verde, guacamole), marinades, stews, grilled meats and cheese-based dishes. Once dried and ground into powder, it becomes a versatile spice that adds heat without masking other flavors.
Is green Jalapeño pepper hot?
Green Jalapeño pepper is considered moderately hot. On the Scoville scale, it generally ranges between 4,500 and 5,000 units. This means it provides a pleasant and progressive heat sensation, accessible even to people not accustomed to very hot peppers.
In powder form, its spiciness is more consistent and easy to measure. It is perfect for spicing up a dish without excess, while maintaining a good balance between strength and flavor.
What does green Jalapeño pepper taste like?
Green Jalapeño pepper is distinguished by a fresh, vegetal and slightly tangy taste. Unlike some riper or stronger peppers, it develops herbaceous notes, sometimes slightly fruity, with a hint of smokiness when dried.
Its powdered version allows for uniform distribution of its aromas in culinary preparations. It pairs very well with cheese, eggs, grilled vegetables, white meats, fish and tex-mex dishes.
