As soon as you take out your barbecue, it's better to prevent any risk. Here are simple rules to follow:
-
- Rule number 1: Choose a safe place for barbecuing. Where you're going to place your barbecue is essential. Don't put it near the house, trees, or anything else that could catch fire.
-
- Rule number 2: Always be ready to extinguish a fire. To do this, always have a fire extinguisher or sufficient water nearby to overcome a fire outbreak. An accident can happen so quickly.
-
- Rule number 3: Don't have flammable products near the barbecue. The temperature developed by the barbecue can cause these products to explode, the same goes for barbecue lighter fuels. Anyway, I strongly advise against using these fuels - don't forget that to make a good barbecue you need time (see barbecue basics).
-
- Rule number 4: If your gas barbecue doesn't light after 10 seconds, turn off the gas, wait 5 minutes then try again (check if the bottle isn't empty!!!). A gas cloud can form very quickly and is likely to injure you.
-
- Rule number 5: Regularly check that your gas barbecue has no leaks. Especially check the supply hoses. If they have a leak, replace them without delay.
-
- Rule number 6: Make sure there's no more fire when you stop your barbecue. For a gas barbecue, turn off the burners as well as the gas bottle valve. For a wood barbecue, place the lid on the barbecue to protect it from wind and let the coals burn out. Wait at least 48 hours before removing the coals from the barbecue, and never throw hot ashes in a trash can.
- Rule number 7: Make sure the person in charge of the barbecue is in full possession of their faculties and is not distracted or drunk.
