If you like barbecue, most of the time you arrange with your wife for her to take care of the potatoes, small carrots, etc... because in addition to the barbecue you won't be able to manage everything alone. This is often why the meat ends up burning (if not the house!!!). Foil packets are an excellent solution for cooking everything at the same time on the barbecue.

Making foil packets

Nothing could be simpler than preparing a foil packet. First, you'll need aluminum foil wide enough to contain the food (generally we count 1 portion per packet, so 1 packet = 1 person). You spread the aluminum on a table and arrange the food in the center: meat, fish, seafood, vegetables, etc... Then you close the packet. Where the packet is closed, you add a piece of aluminum to prevent it from reopening. Similarly, don't squeeze too tight so that the food still has room to cook in its own juices.

Season your foil packet

As I just wrote above, it's necessary to have enough "juice" so as not to dry out the food in the packet. To do this, I advise you to always season the food in the packet (before cooking, of course...). You can use:

  • water
  • wine
  • fruit juice
  • beer
  • oil
  • vinegar
  • strong hot sauce, medium or mild...
  • broth
  • tomato sauce

I would advise you to choose a seasoning that will bring more flavor to your packet. You can also add spices and peppers to flavor the food, but always add a little liquid with it, so it doesn't dry out.

Grilling a foil packet

This is probably the easiest dish to make (it's even a complete menu with meat and vegetables). However, the packet can also burn. I remind you that the temperature of a barbecue can exceed 300 degrees, so be careful. You must regularly turn your packets and check the cooking regularly if you don't want to have a charred packet. If the aluminum foil browns on the outside, it's very likely that what's inside is burned or at least overcooked. Don't leave the packet under a flame or under the hottest coals, place your packets in the cooler corners of your fire.

Foil packets on the barbecue are a wonderful idea. If you want to amaze your friends, mix for example a fish fillet, lemon juice, onions, some vegetables and herbs and spices, then serve still wrapped in the packet - the result is a real success. Moreover, even though you mustn't forget it on the fire, the barbecue packet requires less attention than a large piece of meat.
