When you cook, do you clean the stove? Of course you do, and the same goes for your barbecue. If you want to keep your barbecue in good condition and, most importantly, preserve the taste of your grilled foods, take care of your barbecue. From the grill to the firebox, each part of the barbecue needs maintenance.

Cleaning the grill

The BBQ grill is the only part of the barbecue that needs to be cleaned after each use. Cleaning the barbecue grill and removing all traces of burnt grease will prevent meat from sticking to the grill during the next cooking session. You can find many utensils and products available on the market today. I would only recommend one: a good wire brush. It will be more than enough to make your grill look brand new with each use. It's crucial to clean the grill once you're done barbecuing, not before the next use. Once the grill is slightly cooler, don't wait for it to get cold as it will be much more difficult to remove grease stains.

cleaning a wood barbecue

We've already seen how to clean the grill. It's imperative to clean it after each use, when the grill is lukewarm. As for the firebox, it's simple. Let the embers cool down, remove them, then use a brush to scrub vigorously to remove charcoal traces. As with the grill, you'll only need a wire brush. However, I recommend using two different brushes for cleaning the grill and the firebox. It's important to clean the firebox regularly because, with frequent use, it can develop bad flavors and, most importantly, cause unwanted excess smoke. A deep cleaning is necessary once a year, preferably at the end of the season. If the color of your barbecue is altered by time, you can simply buy special high-temperature paint to give it a brand new look.

cleaning your gas barbecue

For the lucky owners of a gas barbecue, you may have noticed that some models have a "clean" button. Many people think that pressing the button is enough to clean your gas barbecue. Well, no, that's not sufficient. This button only serves to slightly heat the grill to make it easier to remove grease marks. As with a wood barbecue, it's essential to clean the grill after each use. Similarly, you'll need to clean the burners. If you have a gas barbecue with lava rocks, the lava rocks should not be washed, so avoid soaking them in bleach or dish soap, it's a very bad idea... You should change the lava rocks every year if you use your barbecue regularly. Lava rocks retain the fat from food, so over time they may give your grilled foods a bad taste. Likewise, if you can't disassemble the gas burners of your barbecue to clean them, it would be better to change them every 2 or 3 years depending on your level of use.

Whether it's a gas or wood barbecue, it's crucial to take care of it to always get good cooking results without bad tastes.
