Of Mexican origin and to honor their roots, the hot sauce brand chose to take the name of the city of Cholula (in Mexico therefore), which has existed for 2,500 years, it is the oldest inhabited city in North America! A beautiful tribute to this spicy, hot and beautiful country!
The history of Cholula sauces
The Mexican recipe exists and is passed down from generation to generation, a tradition that lasts and endures. For exactly how long and by whom?
The Cholula company is located on the Northwest bend of Chapala lake in Mexico and it has been 3 generations that traditional sauce production has been in full swing (700,000 bottles of sauces sold per day worldwide).
Originally their recipe was used for preparing Sangrita, it is a non-alcoholic drink like tomato juice that accompanies a shot of tequila (yes it strongly resembles Bloody Mary).
The Harrison family founded the Cholula hot sauce brand and decided to put on their label a Mexican abuelita (grandmother) in order to pay her a beautiful tribute.
The mildly spicy sauces were exported to Austin in the United States in 1989.
When the sauces crossed the border, people's enthusiasm was impressive and it is now quite naturally that these bottles travel around the world and are marketed (almost) everywhere!
In April 2019, the richest man in France, Bernard Arnault owner of LVMH decided quite simply to buy the spicy sauce company.
Cholula sauce is a recipe based on Pequin peppers and Árbol, the latter is described by Miguel Padilla the factory director as the greatest of peppers, the most special and unique taste-wise.
The manufacturing process takes 7 months from planting the pepper plants to bottling. This requires many steps such as fruit growing time, harvesting, 3 days of sun drying, manufacturing, bottling and finally labeling. However, it was out of the question for Cholula to change anything, because for them the best is in tradition.
Today it is still made in Mexico, with local ripe ingredients and an original blend of spices.
According to the Cholula brand itself, it has become "el sabor perfecto" (= the perfect taste). The recipe has remained unchanged for years and has now diversified into 6 flavors:
- The Cholula Original
- The Cholula chipotle with smoky flavor
- The Cholula garlic (with garlic)
- The Cholula Green Pepper (with green pepper)
- The Cholula chili lime (with lemon)
- The Cholula Sweet Habanero!
- Cholula extra hot
Cholula takes great care to offer slightly spicy sauces, in order to suit all palates and thus spice up everyone's life!
Where to use this famous sauce?
On pizzas obviously, pasta, with rice, a mixed salad, with your stuffed zucchini, to make spicy cocktails, on your meats of course, to dip your vegetable patties, to spice up traditional guacamoles, to sprinkle on nachos, and especially everywhere.

What does Cholula give on the Scoville scale?
According to the manufacturers of the Cholula brand, it is located between 500 and 1,000 on the Scoville scale.
However peppers change depending on seasons, soil, sunshine, so it is quite possible to find one bottle stronger than another.
This is why the Scoville scale has been revised upward, as some people felt the burn of capsaicin more strongly than others:
- 3,000 on the Scoville scale for the Cholula Original
- About 3,000 on the Scoville scale for the Cholula chipotle
- 3,000 for the Cholula garlic
- 1,000 for the mild Cholula Green Pepper
- 3,000 for the Cholula chili lime
- And about 10,000 for the latest little one, the Cholula Sweet Habanero!
- And 30,000 for the new Cholula extra hot released in 2025.
Locate your Cholula on the Scoville scale and compare it with your other favorite sauces!
The product is packaged in a glass bottle with an iconic round wooden cap. The creators of Cholula take pleasure in watching and congratulating their customers who have fun recycling their famous bottle.
You can therefore transform them into soap dispensers, bracelets, pencil holders, bowls, wind chimes and many more! Will you also be creative?
